The Kerry branch of the Vintners' Federation met last night to discuss a growing dispute between Travellers and publicans in the county.

Last weekend protests were staged outside pubs in Listowel.

Up to 40 placard-carrying Travellers blocked the entrance to one pub until gardaí arrived.

A spokesman for the Travellers, Mr Leonard Evans, said they were now targeting pubs which refused to serve groups of Travellers.

A series of protests is also being planned outside public houses in Tralee, Mr Evans said.

"What is happening in Listowel is true of Kerry as a whole. "A few pubs will serve Travellers. Very few will serve groups of Travellers. It's getting worse," he said.

He added that pubs in Listowel, Tralee and Killarney are putting up notices and "using excuses" saying they are having private parties, to keep Travellers out. Mr Evans said he had seen such notices. "If one person in the group causes trouble, that person should be barred, not the whole group," he said. Mr Evans, who is considering running for the town council in Listowel, said he had not been in a pub with his wife, Christine, in seven weeks.

Travellers from other parts of Kerry are to converge on Listowel this weekend, unless an undertaking from all pubs is given to admit groups of Travellers.

Mr Christy Walsh, chairman of the Vintners' Federation of Ireland in Listowel, said it was not true to say that the 38 pubs there had a blanket ban against Travellers. He said a statement would be issued todayafter the meeting of the federation.

Garda Supt Frank O'Brien said problems between Travellers and publicans had only arisen in recent weeks and he was "very disappointed" by the development.
