Two men captured in an international sting operation that broke up a plot to smuggle a missile capable of shooting down a commercial jetliner into the United States have appeared in court.
Mr Hemant Lakhani, a 68-year-old from Hendon, north London, was accused in the New Jersey court of providing material support to terrorists and illegal weapons dealing. He has been remanded in custody without bail.
A second man, Mr Moinuddeen Ahmed Hameed, faces charges of money-laundering in connection with the plot.
Mr Lakhani was arrested in Newark yesterday after trying to sell a shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile to FBI informants posing as extremists claiming they wanted to shoot down a large commercial airliner, officials said.
Mr Hameed was arrested in New York, as was a third man, Mr Yehuda Abraham, who is due to appear in court in Manhattan today on money laundering charges.
