Two people were rescued from a high ridge on Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain late at the weekend after losing their way.
Hundreds of people have been climbing in the area each day over the Christmas/New Year break.
It is understood the man and woman, both in their 20s and from the Cork/Kerry area did not have adequate navigational equipment. They were on the way down when they became disorientated and had gone off route. Twenty members of Kerry Mountain Rescue reached them at about 9pm.
They had called for assistance shortly before 5.45pm saying they were stuck on the mountain.
Spokesman Gerry Christie said the area had steep drops of 100 metres and the team was forced to walk them back up to the summit to find a safe way down. They reached the base of the mountain at 1am yesterday. They were suffering from cold but did not need medical attention.
Meanwhile, the young woman who lost her life while kayaking on the Gaddagh river also on Carrauntoohil has been named locally as 21-year-old Deirdre Conroy, a radiography student at UCD from Portarlington, Co Laois. She was pulled from the water by members of her group, the canoe/kayak club at UCD.
