Irish workers only take an average of 22 minutes for lunch compared to 45 minutes three years ago, according to a survey published today.

The survey also finds that nearly three quarters of Irish workers eat their lunch at their desks.

A jacket potato is the nation’s favourite lunchtime nibble with 72 per cent opting for it, according to the research by employment law firm Peninsula Ireland. A total of 63 per cent of employees believe their boss discourages them in some way from taking a full one-hour lunch break.

The top five workplace lunch choices are jacket potato, fruit, pre-packed salad, pre-packed sandwiches and chips.

“People have become a lot busier and they are choosing to use their free time to catch up on work,” said Alan Price, Head of Peninsula Ireland.

“Their lunch choices are reflecting this and they are choosing quick options that can be eaten at desks. It is surprising to see that the pub lunch no longer features as it was second choice in 2005.”

The survey was conducted among 2,672 employees from a variety of industries
