An eight-car commuter train derailed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport last night, injuring 32 people on board after it failed to stop at an underground station.

The train climbed over the last stop, jumped up on the pavement and then went up the stairs and escalator, Chicago fire commissioner Jose Santiago said. Authorities are trying to piece together what happened but said the train was probably travelling too fast, Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Brian Steele said.

The derailment, at one of the busiest airports in the US, happened at around 2.50am (7.50am Irish time).

Investigators are not sure how many people were on board but say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
