He was a native of Keash, Co Sligo and a national teacher. He was a member of the Volunteers, of Sinn Féin and of the IRB (into which he was sworn by Seán McDermott).

He was elected to the first Dáil, representing South Sligo, in 1918. In 1920, he was elected to Sligo's first republican county council. He took a prominent part in both the War of Independence and the Civil War.

In 1933 he founded the Educational Building Society, of which he was secretary and managing director until his retirement in 1970.
