Madam, - The Brian Murphy case brought to light some very violent events, related to over-consumption of alcohol by young adults. In the light of these events, can we hope that the Taoiseach will refrain from bringing President and Mrs Bush to a pub during their forthcoming visit to this country?
Mr Ahern seems to be particularly fond of staging photo-calls in the nearest licensed premises. He seems to want to give the impression that the main pas-time for our population is drinking. To counteract this, he might bring his guests to a cultural event such as a play at our National Theatre or a concert at our National Concert Hall.
Such action might go some small way towards counteracting our reputation as a nation of heavy drinkers.
It might also make some of our population realise that not every social event in our lives needs to be lubricated by alcohol. - Yours, etc.,
