Madam, - When visiting Singapore some weeks ago I was amazed to see no chewing gum on the streets - anywhere! This is because the law against littering the streets is enforced. (Whatever happened to the Fianna Fáil TD who used to jump up and down and get red in the face about "zero tolerance", and of course promptly forgot all about it when he came into office?) In Singapore one can end up being heavily fined and cleaning the streets.

The users of chewing gum need to be trained in the use of the wrapping on the gum. One is meant to retain the silver wrapping to dispose of the gum when finished, but who knows or cares?

Perhaps manufacturers should be compelled to clean up the mess, which gets worse by the minute. - Yours, etc.,
