Sir, – Angela Ruttledge's excellent article "We need to move from knowing about climate change to believing in it" (Opinion & Analysis, July 21st) gets to the heart of the issue. There is no escaping the reality of climate change but our economic system continues to bound forward based on the impossible theory of infinite growth on a finite planet with finite resources, regardless of the destruction that mindset causes. There is no way a rational government would decide subsidies should continue for ecosystem-collapsing over-fishing fleets or the over-farming of our fields but sadly because that is how it used to be, that is how it continues to be. Allow fresh thinking to dictate our policies, based on science, rather than past mistakes. – Yours, etc,
