High heels and dress codes

Sir, – I am baffled by the controversy over women and high-heeled shoes (May 14th). I am entirely for freedom of choice for all in how we dress, always assuming that it doesn't frighten the horses. However, requiring someone to wear a shoe with a two-inch heel doesn't strike me as massively onerous, so long as it is made clear before the offer of employment is accepted.

We should recall the shoes worn by former president of France Nicolas Sarkozy, or any self-respecting cowboy.

The only question really is why women persist with the self-inflicted health problems associated with very high heels.

I suspect that women will persist in this madness because they like the way such shoes look, the way wearing them makes them feel, and the effect they have on the male of the species. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I agree with SE Lydon (May 13th) that, in the interests of equality, it is high time that there were more male receptionists. For the same reason, they should be instructed to wear high heels. And why not visible make-up as well? – Yours, etc.,
