Sir, – About a year ago, I decided that this unfit, middle- aged man should cycle to work every day, a 40km round-trip. However, I did so for different “socio-economic” reasons than Gavin Dredge’s suggestion of gym membership (January 23rd). Rather, I simply could no longer afford to commute by car.
Indeed, after scraping together the money to buy a second-hand bike, and prioritising the repairs needed as I could afford them, it was several months before I could invest in a helmet. I wholeheartedly agree they are a benefit to cyclists, but to make them mandatory is to put them ahead of balding tyres and worn brake pads. Prevention is better than cure, and in this case, education is better than legislation.
As an aside, I should point out that despite the grim picture painted by some, cycling conditions in my experience have improved considerably since my college days. Together with the health benefits I’ve enjoyed in recent months, I would recommend most commuters should give it a go! – Yours, etc,
