Sir, – Finbar Kearns (Letters, March 20th) queries the use of first and second names for female jockeys, and just an initial for the first name of their male colleagues, on race card listings. All amateur jockeys (male and female) are listed by title, first and second names while professionals are described by title, initial and surname. At the jockey's request these can be changed but it is a useful way to differentiate amateur from professional and allow the racing public become familiar with new participants' names. There is no gender equality issue here. Let us celebrate the successes our Irish jockeys without seeking negatives. – Yours, etc,
LIAM PLUCK,
Enniskerry,
Co Wicklow.
