Madam, - The stretch between South Great George's Street and Portobello Bridge has become a dangerous place between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. every weekend. It is particularly menacing on the night after our national saint's day.
In those blessed early hours, as shamrock blended with puke on them rare oul' cobbles, I witnessed a handful of vile, casual street assaults, but nary a State-authorised peacekeeper.
Perhaps the police were too busy over on O'Connell Street. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN STEPHENSON, Bessborough Hall, Bessborough Parade, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
