Madam, - There has been speculative comment in recent weeks that the smoking ban has affected takings in border-based hospitality business such as ours by as much as 40 per cent against last years. These doomsday statistics couldn't be further from the truth. The North West Tourism chairman who has been heralding these statistics would spend more valuable time promoting the positive sides of the ban instead of calling on a publican to openly break and challenge the legislation.

It is with tremendous gratitude to the continued custom of regular customers, especially the many smokers, who have accepted the ban and enjoyed the healthier and more comfortable atmosphere that it has created.

To our delight, many new customers have been attracted from Northern Ireland into Donegal to this clean environment. Business isn't down at all, although we have noticed people have become more conscious about where they spend their money. The basic principles are as important as ever - offer true hospitality, great service and better value. If only North West Tourism would promote them more. - Yours, etc.

DONAL DOHERTY, Manager Harry's Bar and Restaurant, Co Donegal.
