The Brexit debate and Ireland

Sir, – Oilibhéaéar Ã"Ó Braonááin (Letter,May 17th) accuses Boris Johnson, who advocates Brexit, of being "cynical and disingenuous in his selective reading of history". To prove his point, he quotes Winston Churchill calling for a "United States of Europe" in a 1946 speech in Zurich, to demonstrate Mr Johnson's duplicity.

Mr Ó Braonáin does not quote the concluding paragraph of the Zurich speech, in which Churchill made clear his view on the emerging Europe: “Therefore, I say to you, let Europe arise . . . Great Britain, the British Commonwealth of Nations, mighty America and I trust Soviet Russia . . . must be the friends and sponsors of the new Europe and must champion its right to live and shine”.

In truth, Churchill saw Great Britain not as a member of the new Europe, but as a friend and sponsor. – Yours, etc,
