Sir, – It is troubling to read that many people are against the installation of wind farms in Ireland.
The most recent reports from MIT, and other institutions, of the impact of fossil fuels on the environment suggest that earlier estimates were hopelessly optimistic and that it may already be too late to prevent catastrophic climate change which could leave the world uninhabitable for humans. This conclusion represents the consensus of around 98 per cent of the international scientific community, the other 2 per cent being largely in the pay of fossil-fuel and other corporations responsible for the damage.
The overwhelming legacy of this generation will be our failure to stop a tiny proportion of the world’s wealthiest people from destroying the planet for short-term financial gain, unless alternative fuel sources can be implemented in the next few years. Any practical barriers to wind-farm installation must seem trivial compared to the alternative and Ireland can and should lead the world on this issue. – Yours, etc,
