Madam, - Wasn't it Mary Robinson who so prophetically said a few years ago: "Perpetuating the low status accorded to women in the home perpetuates their oppression".

Thanks to our Government's shameful income-tax individualisation, which now penalises single income married couples to the tune of an extra €100 a week, Kitty Holland's report in your edition of February 26th informs us that "women are now ashamed to say they stay at home rather than going out to work".

It is no surprise that Ms Holland's next bullet point says that when the parents are coming home (from work) they meet the children heading out to their part-time jobs. Whither family life? Parental guidance? Family cohesion? Care for ill and elderly family members? Economic sense? - Yours, etc.,
