Six of the top 10 from last week's US Open will contest the Travelers Championship in Connecticut this week, but most eyes will again be on joint runner-up Erik Compton.
The story of Compton and his two heart transplants has been told numerous times, although it took on extra significance at Pinehurst as he challenged for a major title.
The 34-year-old got within four shots of Martin Kaymer late on the front nine in the final round, and although he eventually finished eight shots adrift of the German, a cheque for almost €589,533) has raised hopes of qualifying for the Ryder Cup in September.
“I would love to play on the Ryder Cup team, it’s a huge goal of mine, and that’s now a possibility if I continue to play really, really well,” said Compton, who was fifth in the Bay Hill Invitational and New Orleans Classic earlier this season. “I’m 19th in the standings now.
“Everything is new to me now. Being able to prepare for the British Open, I think that style of golf suits my game, a lot of pars and creative shots. It’s just a dream of mine to be able to say that, and now I can actually live it.”
Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker make up the players from the top 10 at Pinehurst in the field at TPC Highlands.
