Tennis/ Federation Cup: Ireland got off to a promising start when they came through the first of their Europe/Africa Zone Group III Federation Cup games against Montenegro in Mauritius yesterday.

Ireland won the first-round match 2-1 when Emma Murphy convincingly won her singles tie 6-1, 6-1 before Yvonne Doyle teamed up with Kelly Liggan to also win the doubles 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Liggan had earlier lost her singles match in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

The group is split into two round-robin pools. Ireland is in Pool B along with Latvia, Moldova, Malta and Montenegro. The Irish side are striving to become winners of the pool, which will ensure promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group Group II in 2008.
