Ireland's most successful Olympic coach Billy Walsh has left for the US, after contract negotiations between him and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association that had been going on since February broke down.
Although Walsh has consistently said that money was not at issue for him - rather, his problem was a lack of autonomy within the High Performance Unit - the IABA has pointedly made clear that he is joining the US Olympic Committee for what it termed “crazy money”.
While there has been no confirmation of what that new salary will be, it is believed that Walsh will more than double his current terms. These are some of the figures:
€75,000: Billy Walsh's salary as head coach of the IABA's high performance unit.
€95,000: Proposed new salary for Walsh had he stayed in Ireland.
€25,000: Initially proposed bonus for Walsh due to success at international tournaments, later watered down to pool to the be shared among Walsh, his coaches and boxers.
$200,000: Believed to be Walsh's new salary in the US, with add-ons of health insurance, pension plans and flights.
