Cork City have it easy against Limerick FC

Mark O’Sullivan scores twice to keep City’s title hopes alive

Cork City 3 Limerick FC 0 Cork City kept pressure on Dundalk at the top of the Premier Division following a 3-0 victory over Munster rivals Limerick FC at Turner’s Cross.

A brace by Mark O’Sullivan and a Garry Buckley header secured City’s third victory against the Shannonsiders so far this season, with the hosts never really straining themselves for the three points.

With a late-evening sun blazing down, the home team dominated from the kick-off, stretching their league winning streak to six games.

O’Sullivan broke the deadlock with 20 minutes on the clock after getting the deftest of touches on an in-swinging Colin Healy free-kick, the ball striking the far upright before finding its way into the net.

Neat set-up

Liam Kearney should have put the hosts ahead early on, but he could only drag his effort wide after a neat set-up by Billy Dennehy, while Barry Ryan had to be on his toes to stop Dennehy’s cross-come-shot before the break.

Half-time substitute Ross Mann had Limerick’s best chance 50 minutes in.

His volley looked destined for the goal before deflecting off the well-placed Buckley for Prince Agyemang to volley over, but that was as good as it got for the visitors as City proceeded to put the game beyond all doubt.
