Limerick got to within four minutes of their first win in ten matches before substitute Brandon Miele saved Shamrock Rovers' blushes.
Nonetheless the home side still gave Shamrock Rovers a major scare before it ended all square at Jackman Park.
A whopping sixteen points separated the clubs before kick-off and with five minutes remaining bottom side Limerick were clinging a a lead they established after thirteen minutes.
But Miele rescued matters for Rovers with his goal four minutes from the end of a game that could have produced far more goals for the 564 attendance.
Ryan Brennan had the first chance for the visitors after ten minutes but his header was superbly saved by Conor O'Donnell and three minutes later Shane Duggan raced through the Rovers defence and his shot went in off the upright.
Limerick should have doubled their score after 35 minutes but Dean Clarke headed a cross from Ian Turner just wide. Two minutes earlier Luke Byrne's header from Sean O'Connor's corner was just off target, but shortly before the interval Rovers' Keith Fahey missed a great chance.
Rovers had the better of the second half but could not find the target until Miele’s late effort broke Limerick’s hearts.
