Although Jody Morrissey fisted a floating ball past Mick Pender in the third minute of this tie, the Dublin side dominated thereafter. Kilmacud pushed themselves into a two-point lead with 43 minutes remaining and despite winning an enormous amount of possession, they astonishingly failed to score for the remainder of the game. Eire Og, resilient to the last, forced a replay with points from Brian Carbery and Muckle Keating.

Afterwards, Eire Og manager Pat Critchley said that Carbery's "fabulous point from the wing steadied it" and declared the Carlow team content with a draw.

Foul weather sliced the anticipated attendance by half and by the second half, it began to look as though the players might need life jackets. In a physical - and inelegant - game, both teams struggled manfully in the quagmire and conspired to produce seven points a piece. Muckle Keating scored a deserved equaliser for Eire Og with a late point. There was some controversy over the amount of injury time played by referee Brian White and, again, Kilmacud saw what appeared to be a valid score scratched off. In the 39th minute, the umpires waved a shot by Mick O'Keeffe wide, mirroring Ray Cosgrove's attempt in the first game, which was adjudged wide despite looking good.
