Irish rugby legend Johnny Sexton is renowned for his leadership and outstanding consistency over his career. In discussion, as a Lexus brand ambassador – celebrating the launch of the Lexus RZ EV, available with One Motion Grip steering system, and the new ES Saloon – he shares his thoughts on leadership, what it takes to perform at the highest level over his career and the differences and similarities between his sporting and business careers.

For more than a decade, Johnny Sexton, as Ireland’s most influential fly-half and long-time captain, carried responsibility for decision-making and leadership on the pitch.

Now, having moved into full-time coaching while remaining active in business, the principles that defined his playing career continue to shape his approach.

Leadership forged under pressure

Sexton’s leadership was forged in high-stakes environments where clarity mattered as much as talent. Preparation, he believes, was the foundation.

“In elite sport, pressure is constant,” he reflects. “The challenge isn’t removing it, it’s learning how to function clearly within it.”

That clarity came from meticulous preparation, understanding systems, rehearsing scenarios and building trust within the group.

When pressure peaked, decision-making became instinctive rather than forced.

Now operating within coaching environments at the highest level, including with the IRFU and the British & Irish Lions, Sexton views leadership from a wider perspective.

“As a player, your focus is narrow. As a coach, you’re thinking about how to create an environment where others can perform,” he says.

“But the fundamentals don’t change. Trust, clarity and standards still matter most.”

Sexton is quick to point out that his leadership style did not emerge in isolation. Early in his career, he learned by observing those in advance of him.

“When you come into an environment like Leinster or Ireland, you’re surrounded by leaders,” he says. “You don’t start by leading, you start by listening.”

Figures such as Brian O’Driscoll, he explains, set the benchmark. “Brian led in a way that was incredibly demanding, but always team-first. Watching how he prepared, how he spoke, how he carried responsibility, those things stay with you.”

Adaptability drives high performance consistency

The game Sexton entered as a young professional has changed dramatically.

Increased pace, physicality and tactical complexity have reshaped rugby, demanding constant adaptation from players and coaches alike.

“High performance is about being comfortable with change,” he says. “You need to adapt without losing what makes you effective in the first place.”

Across club and international rugby, Sexton repeatedly refined his approach, adjusting his physical preparation, evolving his leadership style and learning to adapt to different coaching philosophies.

Coaches such as Joe Schmidt and Andy Farrell, he says, challenged him to see the game differently and to think more deeply about detail and clarity.

“Every coach brings a new perspective,” he explains. “If you’re open to that, you keep growing.”

That adaptability, he believes, is now a defining requirement of high performance in any field. “Whether it’s sport or business, environments change quickly. The people who succeed are the ones who can adjust without losing their identity.”

From the pitch to the boardroom and back again

Sexton’s career path has been unusually broad.

Time spent in senior business roles between playing and coaching gave him a fresh perspective on leadership beyond sport.

“The similarities surprised me,” he admits. “High-performance teams, whether in rugby or business, are built on the same foundations, culture, communication and trust.”

Those lessons have fed directly back into his coaching approach.

Mentoring younger players, he places particular emphasis on decision-making, emotional control and long-term development rather than short-term outcomes.

“Leadership isn’t about having all the answers,” he says. “It’s about asking the right questions and creating space for others to grow.”

Consistency as a competitive advantage

Consistency was the hallmark of Sexton’s playing career. Now, looking back, he sees consistency not as rigidity but as discipline, the ability to maintain standards while adapting to change.

It is a principle he continues to prioritise as a coach and leader.

“You don’t win big games on talent alone,” he says. “It’s about turning up day after day, executing the basics well and staying composed when it matters.”

That focus on detail, he believes, is often undervalued. “It’s not glamorous, but it’s what sustains performance over time.”

A new chapter, grounded in experience

Now firmly immersed in coaching, Sexton views this phase not as a departure from rugby but as a continuation of it.

“Success looks different now,” he reflects. “It’s about helping others perform, developing leaders and contributing to environments that last.”

Looking ahead, he hopes to continue bridging sport, coaching and business, applying lessons learned on the pitch to broader leadership challenges.

He is also conscious of the people who shaped his own journey, team-mates, coaches and mentors whose influence extended far beyond results.

“No one does this alone,” he says. “You’re always building on what others give you.”

Switching off to sustain performance

Sexton is candid about the demands of elite sport and leadership roles. Without balance, he says, sustained performance is difficult.

“Early in my career, everything revolved around rugby,” he reflects.

“Over time, I learned that stepping away, spending time with family and creating space actually improved how I performed.”

That need for balance has only increased since transitioning into coaching.

A weekend away with his family, time spent pursuing his passion for golf, or the serenity of driving allows him to reset mentally.

One driving destination in particular holds personal significance.

“Kerry has always meant a lot to me,” he says. “My dad’s from Kerry, so there’s a strong connection there. I love driving down with my family, getting away from everything and spending time in that part of the country.”

Those journeys, taken behind the wheel of his Lexus RX F-Sport plug-in hybrid, provide rare head space.

“Driving gives you time to think,” he says. “Sometimes it’s the only place where it’s just you and your thoughts.”

Golf has also become one of his main outlets. A keen golfer who plays off a five handicap, Sexton enjoys the contrast it offers to professional sport.

“Golf forces you to slow down,” he says. “You’re on your own with your thoughts. There’s no hiding.”

The appeal, he explains, lies in the detail and patience required, familiar traits from rugby, applied differently.

As Johnny Sexton progresses through the next phase of his career, the principles that shaped his leadership success preparation, anticipating the future and consistence performance at the highest level continue to guide him.
