Indian nationals were the top weekly earners at businesses based in the Republic in 2023, new Central Statistics Office (CSO) data reveals, as the number of people employed by Irish-owned enterprises jumped.

Some 1,877,800 people were employed by Irish-owned enterprises in November 2024, up 2.9 per cent on an annual basis.

Meanwhile, the number of people employed in foreign-owned companies in the Republic edged 0.5 per cent higher from the previous year to 618,700 last November.

The CSO’s latest employment and earnings insight release also reveals that Indian nationals were the highest median earners in 2023, taking in some €883.74 weekly.

This was followed by Irish nationals UK nationals at €745.71 per week and Irish nationals with median weekly earnings of around €728.

Ukrainian nationals were the lowest weekly earners in 2023 with €450.29 followed by Brazilians with €514.15 and Lithuanian nationals with median weekly earnings of €594.21.

In 2023, foreign-owned enterprises owned by non-EU multinationals paid the highest median weekly wages at €906.74, the CSO said, up 5.6 per cent from the previous year.

Irish-owned enterprises, meanwhile, recorded the lowest weekly earnings at €654.41 with almost half of all Irish-owned companies paying less than €600 per week.

“Median weekly earnings among Irish nationals tended to be higher than non-Irish nationals across all nationality of enterprise ownership categories in 2023,” said Dr Eimear Heffernan, statistician in the earnings analysis division of the CSO.

“However, the range in earnings by individual nationality was considerable,” she said.

“Median weekly earnings were highest among Indian nationals in employment in both Irish-owned enterprises (€792.59) and foreign-owned enterprises (€1,096.05) in 2023. In contrast, median weekly earnings of €425.75 and €538.26 were recorded among Ukrainian nationals employed in Irish-owned and foreign-owned enterprises, respectively.”
