UK Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair last night insisted Britain must be "a leading player in Europe, not a bit player" as he claimed the Conservatives were embracing isolationism.

"It is necessary to make the case for engagement not isolation as the basis of British foreign policy in the 21st century," Mr Blair said. Speaking in the City of London, Mr Blair defended the British government's "constructive engagement" with the European Union.
