The management company for Blanchardstown Shopping Centre yesterday lodged a planning application to extend the centre at a cost of €40 million.

The application will involve a 9,290sq m (100,000sq ft) extension of the Red Mall to include a new key store of 3,716sq m (40,000sq ft) and 18 standard retail units. A number of existing tenants will be relocated to facilitate the new development.

Last May Multi Corporation, the pan-European company that has managed the centre since August 2016, also lodged a planning application with Fingal County Council to provide an additional 5,574sq m (60,000sq ft) of new, large retail units on both the lower and upper central malls at a cost of €15 million.

The latest planning applications, if approved, will lead to the creation of 300 permanent jobs and an additional 250 during the construction phase. The centre already employs about 5,500 people.

Dominic Deeny, managing director of Multi Ireland, said the development proposal was the second in a number of planned investments in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. He said these investments will create the enhanced shopping experience that their customers expected and provide the range of unit sizes and configurations that retailers required.

Multi Corporation, a manager and redeveloper of shopping centres, is owned by Blackstone, which acquired the Blanchardstown centre for €945 million.
