Electric Ireland has issued a warning about a scam email circulating that seeks to deceive people into providing personal financial information.

The company is advising customers that it has not issued the mail and has urged them not to not to click on the link included or to reply to the email.

Electric Ireland said the email was a so-called phishing scam, in which people are asked to provide key information such as passwords or bank account numbers.

The mail purporting to come from Electric Ireland seeks both banking details and a scanned copy of an individual’s passport.

Electric Ireland urged any customer who may have completed the form in the email to contact their debit card company or bank immediately using the phone number listed on the back of their debit card. It also advised such customers to immediately change their password on their online billing account.

“We would like to assure all Electric Ireland customers that your personal details on Electric Ireland’s database are secure and have not been compromised. This is a phishing email scam. Our IT department are investigating and we have reported the matter to the gardai,” it said.
