Hopping on the bus saves on tax

Taking public transportation to work will save on taxes according to the November issue of Consumer Choice magazine. "The current tax regime allows you to receive monthly or annual travel passes from your employer without paying any benefit-in-kind." This does not apply to daily or 10-journey tickets.

If, for example, you travel to Dublin for work you could receive £60 (€76.18) a month or £720 a year tax free says the Consumers' Association of Ireland publication. This is based on a monthly adult bus and rail short-hop ticket in Dublin. It shouldn't take much to convince employers as they save employer PRSI of either 12 per cent or 8.5 per cent depending on the employee's earnings.
