Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and Stone Container have cleared the first regulatory hurdle for their $4.4 billion merger after the merger cleared the American anti-trust process. The merger still has to clear the European Commission competition regulators and be approved by both sets of shareholders. Little difficulty is expected in getting EU clearance while shareholder approval is seen as a foregone conclusion.
