Smurfit Kappa has opened a new ecommerce packaging laboratory in the UK, expanding its network of testing labs and centres for retailers and producers seeking to develop packaging solutions.

The new lab in Northampton is International Safe Transfer Association (ISTA) certified, a standard often required by online selling platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba or eBay.

The lab helps support retailers and producers in the development, testing and launch of disruptive packaging solutions for ecommerce at minimal risk.

"Our customers need innovative and sustainable packaging solutions to meet growing demand from online sales," said Eddie Fellows, chief executive of UK and Ireland.

“The lab is an ideal environment for us to work with customers to develop new packaging in real time. Whether our customers are moving to online retail to increase their customer base, or introducing new packaging solutions, by securing the necessary certifications in our lab they have a clear path to develop solutions quickly that are resilient to supply chain damage.”

Smurfit Kappa has more than 14 years of experience and data from testing packaging solutions to ensure they are fit for purpose and meet the challenges presented by the ecommerce supply chain.

Its experts work with customers to develop new packaging solutions to minimise and prevent product damage during distribution. Prototype designs are rigorously tested to ensure they meet compression, drop and vibration standards, and once certification has been obtained the packaging solutions are put into production for customers.

"Our network of innovation centres ensures sustainable, adaptable and scalable solutions, and underscores our focus in ecommerce," said Arco Berkenbosch, vice-president of innovation and development.

“We are committed to continuing our investment in laboratories that directly benefit our customers, providing a real advantage over their competitors and offering customers even greater value.”
