Irish radio industry joins World Radio Alliance

Organisation set up to speak for global industry with collective voice

Radiocentre Ireland, the organisation formed recently to promote Irish radio to advertisers, has joined World Radio Alliance, a group of 14 trade associations set up to "underline the many strengths of radio" in the media market.

The other founding members of the alliance are similar organisations based in the UK, the US, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Canada and Australia, as well as Egta, the international association of television and radio sales houses.

The alliance, which aims to represent the global radio industry with a collective voice, has been launched ahead of February 13th, the eleventh annual UNESCO-designated World Radio Day.

"Over the last decade, we have seen the rise of more commercial audio formats such as music streaming services and podcasts, yet commercial radio's dominance in the sector remains pretty much intact," said Radiocentre UK client director Lucy Barrett, who will be the alliance's inaugural president.

“But, as is so often the case in the world of media, expectations and perceptions relating to the growth of the new formats are disconnected from this reality,” she said.

Radiocentre Ireland chief executive Ciaran Cunningham said the "fantastic initiative" would highlight the power of radio to advertisers, agencies and industry experts.
