There’s a lot to be said for the loving restoration of classic computer games for smartphone and tablet platforms. We kidults can luxuriate in touchscreen-aided nostalgia and can tell the kids about the good old days when the summers were long and hot and computer games were pixellated and funny.

The latest Lucas Arts classic to receive this treatment is Grim Fandango – this film noir/Mexican folklore mashup is charming and immersive but it can be frustratingly difficult to make progress.

Double Fine Productions has done a nice job in porting this to iOS and Android, having polished the graphics and lush soundscapes (the score was rerecorded with a live orchestra).

The highlight is the developer’s commentary, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making and restoration of a classic.
