The predictions for the internet of things (IoT) are all pointing up, with research firm Gartner estimating 20 billion connected devices by 2020.

While it may seem all systems go for the IoT, the real challenge around security is yet to be addressed by many providers. Connected devices can leave businesses open to data theft, and their consumers can be exposed to hacked devices.

Against this backdrop, Anatoly Lebedev, the co-founder and chief executive of Irish start-up Cesanta, will deliver a keynote address about security for the internet of things at international technology conference CeBit this week.

More than 220,000 attendees from 100 different countries are expected to attend the conference, which is taking place in Hanover in Germany.

Mr Lebedev will tackle how to bring smart devices to market faster without compromising brand and security. He will also discuss the steps a business has to take to ensure security breaches are avoided in the internet of things arena.

“Security is often compromised in favour of bringing a connected product to market fast. With the right partner, there is no need for this compromise. In fact, it should speed up the development process and increase security. There is no need to put your brand or your consumers at risk,” he said.

Mr Lebedev met his cofounder Sergey Lyubka while working at Google’s European headquarters in Dublin and the two of them set up Cesanta.

The company's first product, Mongoose, has been downloaded over one million times. Cesanta's customers include Samsung, Nasa, Dell and HP.
