Steampunk Tower hisses into life amid satisfying creaks of gears and belches of smoke. As the name suggests, this is a tower-defence game with a retro/sci-fi theme. Jules Verne would likely approve of the lovely appearance: Victorian browns and yellows, abundant cogs and whistles, and vehicles with names like Monocle. The object of the game is to position and fortify you defences with the appropriate weapons, upgrading, reloading and positioning them to the best places while they fire on invading enemies. Different weapons have different advantages – machine guns are weaker than cannons, for instance, but have better range and manoeuvrability. It's presented very well, with clear menus and in-game instructions, and tower defence is a fun genre when it's done right. This would be a rave review were it not for minor quibbles: The controls could be a little more responsive and – with challenging levels from the off – there is pressure to make micro-transactions.
