The word 'follower', in modern parlance, has come to mean someone who likes your Instagram posts, gives you some retweet love, or in some way makes you feel as though you are being paid attention to online.
What if you could experience this in real life? A person who follows you (at a distance), observing your daily activities and appreciating everything you do without actually interacting with you as a friend would?
This sounds like an offline version of social media following while also bordering on the notion of being stalked by an unknown person. This is something that artist Lauren McCarthy is playing around with the Follower project.
Through McCarthy’s app, you can sign up to be physically followed by her for an entire day; to find you, she uses the GPS coordinates supplied by the app.
How do you know you have been followed? At the end of the day you will be sent a photograph of yourself taken from a distance. http://follower.today/
