Suspected attacker found during search operation near Evergreen Road area and taken into custody

Gardaí have arrested a man after a woman was stabbed at her home in Cork city on Monday morning.

The man was arrested on waste ground near Evergreen Road on the city’s southside where the woman, aged in her 20s, was attacked.

Gardaí are investigating a possible sexual motive for the attack in which the woman suffered a stab wound to the hand as she fought off her assailant.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she is understood to have undergone surgery for the stab wound as well as a full medical examination.

Local gardaí, assisted by the Garda Air Unit, began a search for the suspect who was arrested a short distance away and taken to the Bridewell Garda station in Cork for questioning.

The suspect is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardaí to hold suspects for up to 24 hours before they are either charged or released.

Gardaí sealed off the house and Garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination of the scene as they try to establish whether there was a forced entry to the property.

Gardaí have also begun door to door inquiries in the area and have are harvesting CCTV footage from the area as they try to establish the suspect’s movements before the attack.
