A 42-year-old Polish man has appeared in court in Trim charged in connection with a road incident in Co Meath last Friday in which an 80-year-old cyclist died.

Piotr Broniarczyk, with an address in Przcmiero, Poland, was charged with failing to offer assistance to Edward McLoughlin. He was also charged with a hit-and-run offence, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident to gardaí.

Garda Sgt Eoin Treacy gave evidence of having arrested the accused on Wednesday evening. Mr Broniarczyk made no reply when charged.

Solicitor Niall Walsh of Power Connolly solicitors said that his client worked for a courier company operating between Ireland and Poland.

Judge Éirinn McKiernan remanded the accused in custody to Trim District Court on September 23rd, and gave consent to bail in his own bond of €200 and also an independent surety offering €10,000 in cash.

The accused was directed to sign on once a month at Trim Garda station.

The incident took place at Bellivor, Co Meath, on the morning of September 12th. Gardaí and emergency services were notified of a collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist on the R156 road.

McLoughlin, from Tim, was discovered unresponsive, and taken to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
