Crazy Itch Radio XL ****
Unlike some of their peers, Basement Jaxx have always kept their footing. Reaching the benchmark of a fourth album without disappearing down one or two blind alleys is something to be commended, especially when you consider how other dance acts fared after the first few releases. It helps that BJ are a must-see live carnival turn, but the Jaxx's lengthy reign owes as much again to Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe's ability to conjure up tracks that are infectious, innovative and, above all else, damn radio-friendly. You'll hear plenty of this mix here, on an album that is bright, bubbly and bold with a very south London pop sensibility. Hush Boy and especially Take Me Back to Your House are giddy, prime-time marvels, but the gritty banger Run 4 Cover (with Lady Marga) and the sparkling groove that bursts forth from Hey U are just as ingenious and ambitious. www.basementjaxx.co.uk Jim Carroll
