Wreath-layings and proclamation readings are among a series of 1916 Rising-related events taking place across the country today.
Wreaths will be laid at key Rising battleground spots across Dublin including Boland’s Mill; Jacob’s Factory (now the National Archives); Dublin Castle; The Four Courts; the Royal College of Surgeons; Moore Street and St James’ Hospital.
Each ceremony will be opened by a government Minister, and the wreaths will be laid at 1.15pm to coincide with the timing of the first shots of the Rising.
There will be a re-enactment of the Battle of Ashbourne, a small-scale military engagement in Co Meath aligned to the rebellion in 1916, at 10.45am, followed by a wreath laying ceremony there.
RTÉ is staging various events today including its Reflecting the Rising showcase which will include hundreds of talks and walking tours as well as music, dance, street art and street theatre across Dublin between 11am and 6pm.
This will be followed by the station's Centenary broadcast from the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre which will feature well-known musicians including Imelda May, Coronas singer Danny O'Reilly and folk artist Dónal Lunny.
