Sir, – Working here in Scotland, one is struck by the lack of memorials to recent Scottish patriots, although there are many fine tributes to those who died in the world wars. Whatever its failings, our O’Connell Street does evoke the spirit of Parnell, Larkin and 1916. Irrespective of how history views their wisdom or their effectiveness, they unquestionably represent a selfless brand of idealism. And yet, in the midst of them and towering over them, is the shining silver edifice that will be forever associated with the most selfish, materialistic years of our country’s history. Surely the time to consider taking down the Spire is now, even if only to relocate it to somewhere more appropriate. Yours, etc,
