It took a collaboration with fellow Windy City player Kanye West to lift veteran rapper Rhymefest (the guy who whupped Eminem's ass in an MC battle) into the headlines. His co-write on Jesus Walks led to a Grammy, a major label deal and an album that will make you wonder just why Rhymefest didn't get a shot at the title before now. While there are a few weary boastathons like Chicago Rillas to contend with, Rhymefest has a gritty, soulful flow and a voice that draws you in, especially when he looks at life beyond the beefs in his 'hood. The presence of West and a bouncy hook should mean pop radio should be all over Brand New, but it's the lyrical jabs and punches which Rhymefest throws on These Days, the thunderous banger Dynomite (Going Postal) and Devil's Pie that will really slay you, the latter built around a sample of Someday by The Strokes. Wry, witty and wise, Rhymefest's a rapper whose promotion is long overdue.
