As a member of saxophonist Steve Coleman's groundbreaking M-Base collective back in the 90s, Andy Milne was one of the first keyboardists to adapt to the radical new rhythmic language then emerging in jazz. With his own group, the Toronto-born pianist has continued to explore this new frontier, drawing on influences that include – in his own words – "Appalachian folk, traditional Armenian, heavy metal, funk, hip hop, jazz, pop and classical music". But Milne has also been influenced by singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, and there is perhaps more lyricism in his sound than in hard core M-Base. He is lyrically assisted here by saxophonist Aaron Kruziki, "percussive poet" John Moon, and a guest appearance from guitarist Ben Monder. andymilne.com
