Bach Violin Concertos

Genre: Classical
Label: Onyx

Bach frequently recycled his own music, and Ottavio Dantone believes the arrangements are so satisfactory because his works "are so structurally and conceptually perfect that they transcend the exterior aspect of sound and timbre". Viktoria Mullova pairs the familiar Violin Concertos in E and A minor with a violin arrangement of the Harpsichord Concerto in E, BWV1053; and Concerto for harpsichord and violin made from the Concerto for two harpsichords, BWV1060, which is also familiar as a Concerto for oboe and violin. You might be surprised at how well the slow movement of the transformed solo harpsichord concerto works, with the filigree of the original plaintively pared back for the violin. The period instruments' performing style is appealingly mellow.
