Lee Bannon's shoving and poking of various electronic music templates until something new falls into place has proved hugely productive for the California native. On Pattern Of Excel, Bannon moves away from the jungle, drum'n'bass and rave sounds that framed last year's Alternate/Endings in favour of darkly-spooked ambient soundscapes, drones and atmospherics. The result is an album of broody, beatless, austere tracks that seem composed with scores in mind. Artificial Statis and SDM are abstract and experimental. He explores spaces and textures with great curiosity and craftsmanship, producing works that remind you of what film score regulars Angelo Badalamenti or Ry Cooder conjured up when scenes called for blue moods. A fine work from an artist very much in transition. leebannon.bandcamp.com
