The role call of gifted drummers who turned up to play on Mike Pride's primal scream of a composition that gives its name to this remarkable recording is as impressive as it is long. Ches Smith, Tyshawn Sorey and Bobby Previte are just a few of the eminent stick wielders who pooled their considerable resources in the cause of Pride's collective "drum-in". At 30 minutes-plus, Pride's free-form improvisation summons the spirit of late Coltrane, channelling rage at the injustice of the world into a boiling stew of drums, cymbals, gongs, bells and whistles. The faint of heart would do well to avoid it; the adventurous of ear should set the volume control to stun and stand well back. mikepride.com
