Newfound Sounds for February

Aoife Barry introduces some breezy sounds to blow off the winter cobwebs

Paddy Hanna is known for his work with bands such as Grand Pocket Orchestra, but his debut solo album, Leafy Stiletto, proves that he's well able to hold his own. Recorded in three days in a rehearsal studio called Fort Chops, it features the sort of jangly pop hooks and quirky lyrics that we've come to expect from Popical Island releases. twitter.com/paddyhannamusic

Masterkinder: Rainbows of my Mind by Scout Hardcastle features vocals, songwriting and production from Meljoann, and is essentially a side-project by the Dublin- based musician. Meljoann's electronic pop sounds are reminiscent of 1990s-era Janet Jackson, but with a strong experimental side. meljoann.com

The Day Tours EP from four-piece Pelicans is a solid indie-pop record that has a tight rhythm section, gently catchy melodies and a youthful radio-friendly sound with an edge. soundcloud.com/pelicansband

Girl Band have always had a great youthful vigour about them, but their darker side is unleashed on their new single, Lawman. They've moved further from their grungier side and are embracing a steely, slightly more pared-back rock sound that Steve Albini would be proud of. girlbanddublin.bandcamp.com

Finally, for those who want something far from grunge, there are Versives, whose album Prussian Blushes is out in February. They make the sort of soft electronic sounds that draw comparisons to New Order and the Pet Shop Boys. soundcloud.com/versives
