There are many adults who will look at what’s on the menu for RTEjr’s new culture show and wonder if the kids are getting a better deal than the grown-ups.
The name of the new radio show is Cake (Culture and Arts for Kids and Everyone) and it aims to delve into the world of arts in a way you don't often see on similarly pitched shows on other channels.
Perhaps this is down to how inquisitive children interact with new stuff, or perhaps it’s finally dawned on commissioning editors that arts coverage needs a bit of a shake-up. After all, there’s more than one way to skin a cat (this show is unlikely to do that, though you’d never know) and you don’t need to lean on the same format every time the arts come to be covered.
Hosted by Abie Philbin Bowman, Cake's ingredients for the first few shows will include a report with a difference on Imma, a kid writing their first song with help from Julie Feeney, comedian Reuben talking about producing a show for younger audiences, the secret code in Frozen, and Rasher painting with a child on the theme of motion and travel. The show will run for 10 weeks, but don't be surprised if Cake becomes a regular part of many kids' diets.
