TRAD
Iarla Ó Lionáird and Micheál Ó Suilleabháin
Ionad Cultúrtha, Ballyvourney, Co Cork 8.30pm €15/20 ionadculturtha.ie
Singer Ó Lionáird brings a wealth of riches from Cúl Aodha, while Ó Suilleabháin, founding director of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, brings a particularly inventive style to his own compositions as well as those from the tradition. A rare pairing of musicians who spark off one another mightily.
THEATRE
The Caretaker
Gate Theatre. Ends Mar 21 7.30pm (Sat mat 2.30pm) €25-35 gatetheatre.ie
The Caretaker was Harold Pinter's first unmitigated success. Still, it has taken the Gate, which has staged more of his plays than any other theatre, a while to come round to it. That could be a sign of its enduring popularity among student theatre groups, drawn to its economy (a battered house), its absurdity (denuded, coded and menacing), and its slippery sense of identity. Toby Frow directs Marty Rea as the vulnerable, damaged Aston, Garrett Lombard as his conniving brother, Mick, and Michael Feast as the tramp they employ as a caretaker, before power struggles lay siege to all compassion. Can anyone really mind themselves?
SINGER-SONGWRITER
Eddi Reader
Mullingar Arts Centre, Co Westmeath 7.30pm €15/€12 mullingarartscentre.ie Also Sat, Sligo; Mon, Belfast; Tues, Louth; Thurs, Dublin
She used to be a pop star but she's alright now. Scotland's Eddi Reader (above left) has, since those heady 1980s days with Fairground Attraction (you know their big hit, Perfect), forged a career as a politicised singer-songwriter.
