Winners of Poetry Aloud competition announced in Dublin

Competition represented ‘the rich cultural diversity’ of post-primary schools in Ireland

The winners of the eighth annual Poetry Aloud competition have been announced.

The competition, organised by the National Library of Ireland and Poetry Ireland, is an annual poetry speaking contest for post-primary school students across the island of Ireland.

In the final round, which took place at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin, Megan Nar, from St Louis Secondary School in Monaghan, won in the junior category. Scion Flanagan, from Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Co Clare, won in the intermediate category, while Cian Siggins, from Coláiste Éinde in Co Galway, won in the senior category.

There were more than 1,700 entries this year, from 118 schools that took part in 18 regional heats.

From the three national category winners, an overall winner is chosen each year, and awarded the Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud award. Megan Nar was presented with her trophy by one of the judges, the poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill .

The overall winner received €500, as well as the trophy, while the winners of the two other categories received €300.
